Overview: Small and flashy with a big personality, these colorful dwarf cichlids exhibit fascinating behavior. Although cichlids have a reputation for aggression, these are different. They are peaceful enough for most community tanks.

Setup Considerations: As with most cichlids, each fish needs space to claim its territory. Creating visual barriers with plants, driftwood, and other hardscape provides distinct territories. Placing caves and other hiding spots within each territory helps these fish feel secure and results in more colorful, active fish. Dither fish help them feel at ease; however, Apistos are slow eaters and may be outcompeted by fast feeders.

Specific Care Requirements: Apistos readily adapt to a wide range of parameters. Stability is key to success.

Diet: Omnivore. They eat any standard aquarium fare.
